Most performance advice focuses on in-game graphics settings, but there’s a layer of Windows and driver-level settings that gets checked once, forgotten, and quietly affects every game you play afterward. Here’s what’s worth confirming.

Game Mode

Settings → Gaming → Game Mode. This tells Windows to prioritize whatever game is in the foreground over background tasks like Windows Update installations and notifications. It’s a modest gain rather than dramatic, but it’s free and has essentially no downside — worth simply confirming it’s on rather than actively researching whether to enable it.

Graphics performance preference (per-app GPU selection)

On laptops or desktops with both integrated and dedicated graphics, Settings → System → Display → Graphics lets you set a specific GPU preference per application. It’s worth checking that your games are actually set to “High performance” (using your dedicated GPU) rather than defaulting to the integrated graphics chip, which silently caps performance without any obvious error message.

Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling

Also under Settings → System → Display → Graphics settings. This offloads some GPU memory management from Windows directly to the GPU, which can reduce latency on supported hardware. It requires a relatively recent GPU and driver to have any effect — if you don’t have either, toggling it does nothing, which is why it’s easy to overlook.

Power plan

Settings → System → Power. Especially relevant on laptops: a power-saving plan actively throttles CPU clock speed to save battery, which can meaningfully cap frame rate in demanding games. Switching to Balanced or Best Performance while plugged in removes that artificial ceiling.

Fullscreen vs. Fullscreen Optimized vs. Windowed

Most modern games run a mode called “Fullscreen Optimized” by default, which is a Windows-managed borderless window rather than true exclusive fullscreen. It’s more convenient for alt-tabbing, but true exclusive fullscreen can offer a small latency advantage in some titles. If a game offers the choice and you’re chasing every bit of responsiveness, it’s worth testing both — the difference is small enough that it’s not worth obsessing over for casual play.

Notifications and Focus Assist

Settings → System → Focus assist, set to activate automatically “When playing a game.” This stops Windows notifications from popping up mid-session and stealing a frame or causing a brief stutter as the OS renders the toast notification — small, but a genuinely annoying interruption to eliminate once and never think about again.

The setting most people skip: driver-level game-specific profiles

Both NVIDIA and AMD control panels let you create per-game profiles for settings like V-Sync, power management mode, and low-latency mode, overriding the global default. If you play one or two games seriously and a rotation of others casually, setting a tuned profile for your main games while leaving the global default conservative is worth the five minutes it takes.
