FOV Calculator

One game's "90 FOV" isn't another's. Some games set field of view horizontally, some vertically, and a wider monitor changes the horizontal figure. Enter your FOV and screen shape to get the matching values.

Which one does my game use? Look at what happens when you change window shape: if a wider window shows more at the sides with the FOV setting unchanged, the setting is vertical or uses Hor+ scaling. Game wikis and the settings menu's tooltip often say which it is.

FOV and sensitivity. A wider FOV makes the screen look like it moves faster, but it doesn't change how far you move the mouse for a full turn. To carry your aim between games, use the sensitivity converter.

How this works

  1. Horizontal and vertical field of view are linked through the aspect ratio: horizontal FOV = 2 × arctan(tan(vertical FOV ÷ 2) × width ÷ height).
  2. To carry a horizontal FOV to a new aspect ratio, it converts to vertical FOV at the old ratio, then back to horizontal at the new one. This is how most games scale FOV for wider screens (Hor+).
  3. Results are rounded to two decimal places.

Games describe FOV in different ways. Some use horizontal FOV, some vertical, and some measure it as if the screen were 4:3. Check which one your game's setting uses before you convert.

Where the figures come from: Standard trigonometry for a flat, rectilinear projection.
